DataBeacon, a leading provider of innovative Flight Information Display Systems, is excited to announce the launch of a Proof of Concept (PoC) for its Romeo5 Ground platform at Leeds Bradford Airport.
As part of the trial, an ADS-B ground receiver has been installed, marking the start of a pioneering collaboration to enhance ground-based situational awareness using ADS-B technology. The initiative aims to support airport performance, offering additional safety and operational benefits, particularly during Low Visibility Procedures (LVPs).
Leeds Bradford Airport has shown a strong commitment to advancing airport safety and operational efficiency. Through this Proof of Concept (PoC), the airport will actively contribute to the development and refinement of DataBeacon’s Romeo5 Ground platform while exploring regulatory requirements both with the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the forthcoming European SMAS (Surface Movement Awareness System) regulation. DataBeacon has played a key role in shaping SMAS, which seeks to standardize and improve surface movement monitoring and control at airports to boost safety and efficiency, and is fully compliant with its standards. The Leeds Bradford PoC will support the validation of SMAS requirements, with the Romeo5 Ground platform demonstrating its alignment with these essential regulatory benchmarks.
Jamie Babbin, Head of Air Traffic Services at Leeds Bradford Airport, said:
“We are pleased to be working with DataBeacon on this exciting Proof of Concept. Ground-based ADS-B situational awareness offers real opportunities to enhance safety and efficiency, and we look forward to exploring how Romeo5 Ground can support our operations both in normal and low-visibility conditions.”
David Perez, CEO of DataBeacon, added:
“Use of ADS-B to provide a robust, accurate, and reliable display of ground operations using our existing ATM-grade Romeo5 Flight Information Display platform further demonstrates how this technology can provide real, tangible benefits to medium and large-scale airport operations. Romeo5’s additional feature set — including data replay, real-time analytical dashboards, and safety alerts — are some of the exciting features we are developing, and we are proud to continue advancing such capabilities.”
The Romeo5 Ground platform is built on the foundation of Romeo5 Air, which is already fully compliant with UK CAA CAP670 standards, offering air traffic services (ATS) teams a highly reliable and user-friendly tool for enhanced situational awareness.
DataBeacon will be showcasing Romeo5 Ground and sharing insights from the Leeds Bradford PoC at Airspace World 2025 in Lisbon this May.
