Gloucestershire Airport has selected Romeo5, a robust Flight Information Display (FID) system designed to enhance situational awareness for air traffic management.
Romeo5, an ATM-grade solution, provides real-time aircraft position data, equipping Air Traffic Control Officers (ATCOs) and Aerodrome Flight Information Service Officers (AFISOs) with comprehensive visibility of both ground and airborne activity.
Featuring a streamlined and intuitive interface, Romeo5 ensures seamless access to core real time system functions. Romeo5 operates on on-premise hardware to ensure the highest reliability, redundancy, and low latency, while also offering complementing functions available on the cloud. For example, the on-premise video playback tool enables incident investigation and analysis, while the cloud-based data recorder and replay tool enhance operational efficiency and post-operational safety assessments.
During implementation, the cloud service enables swift and efficient deployment, allowing operational teams to validate and optimise system layouts and functions within weeks before deployment on-site. Combining dual cloud and on-premise architecture, Romeo5 ensures high redundancy through efficient hardware and a modern code base, setting a new benchmark for safety and efficiency in air traffic management software development.
With the adoption of Romeo5, Gloucestershire Airport is at the forefront of advancing air traffic management capabilities, ensuring safer, more efficient operations for all stakeholders, compliant with CAA CAP670 regulations and the highest human factors international practices in air traffic control.
Chris Brian, Manager Air Traffic Services at Gloucestershire Airport said; “This new Flight Information Display (FID) system will allow Gloucestershire Airport ATCOs to see participating (ADSB-out) aircraft, thus improving their situational awareness and allowing them to use the FID in line with CAP493 procedures. We hope to have the FID operating by Spring 2025 however we will still require approval from the CAA before being able to use it operationally.”

About Gloucestershire Airport:
The existing 300-acre Gloucestershire Airport site was formed in 1936 and originally named Staverton Airport, replacing its predecessor at Down Hatherley Airfield. In 1993 Gloucester City and Cheltenham Borough Councils formed Gloucestershire Airport Limited.
Today, Gloucestershire Airport the UK’s busiest general aviation airport, ranking top in the Civil Aviation Authority’s airports for aircraft movements. It has its own fire station and two business parks spanning a combined 700,000 square-foot, including the recently completed CGX Connect. Numerous high-profile aviation related businesses, such as Babcock, Safran Group and Weston Aviation, call the airport home.
The airport received a much-needed multi-million pound investment in 2021, which was funded by the Gloucestershire Local Enterprise Partnership, Gloucester City and Cheltenham Borough Councils. These upgrades meant the north-south runway could be closed, freeing up over 300,000 square foot of surplus land for development.
In December 2023 Cheltenham Borough and Gloucester City Councils, along with the airport announced they were seeking new investors for this prime aviation hub. The airport is being sold as a going concern saying, ‘’We understand the importance of the airport to the regional economy, and it will be sold as an operational airport, with measures in place to try and secure its future as a viable business for the area.’’ The sale should be completed mid 2025.
The recent airport upgrades, as well as surplus land and a range of potential redevelopment and other commercial opportunities, within the airport and adjoining business parks, mean the airport should prove an exciting proposition for a new owner to come in and build on its historic success.
